Reinsurer SCOR restructures group administration workforce

SCOR announced changes to its executive board aimed at facilitating the next phase of the reinsurer’s strategic development.

According to SCOR, all changes were made with internal promotions.

The following members of the Executive Committee will remain in their current positions:

  • Ian Kelly, as Group Chief Financial Officer
  • Jean-Paul acquaintance, as Chief Executive Officer of SCOR Global P&C
  • Brona magician, as Deputy CEO of SCOR Global Life.

The following GEB members have expanded responsibilities:

  • Francois de Varenne, CEO of SCOR Global Investments, will oversee an expanded leadership role including investments, technology, budget, group project office and group corporate finance. In his new role, he will be responsible for transforming the group.
  • Claire Le Gall-Robinson, Group General Secretary responsible for Governance, Sustainability, Legal and Compliance, has been named Group Chief Sustainability Officer. In addition to her previous duties, she will be responsible for Human Resources, Communications and Hub Operations in this new and expanded role.

The following members of the Executive Committee have new responsibilities:

  • Frieder Knüpling, previously Group Chief Risk Officer, has been appointed CEO of SCOR Global Life, succeeding Paolo De Martin, who has chosen a new direction in his career after successfully serving as CEO of SCOR Global Life since 2014.
  • Romain Launay, previously Group Chief Operating Officer, will be named Deputy CEO of SCOR Global P&C and CEO of Specialty Insurance.
  • Fabian Uffer, previously Group Head Risk Modeling, responsible for the Group’s internal model, succeeds Frieder Knüpling as Group Chief Risk Officer and becomes a member of the Group Management.

Biographies

Jean-Paul acquaintance, American and French citizen, is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley (Master of Science in Structural Engineering) and the Ecole des Travaux Publics, Paris (Diploma in Civil Engineering). He began his career in earthquake engineering in California and then in disaster modeling as the European head of the modeling company EQECAT. He then held several senior positions at Aon Benfield as a reinsurance broker in London and Paris and then at AXA Re in Paris as Global Head of Property. In 2008 he joined SCOR in New York as Chief Underwriting Officer for America for SCOR Global P&C. Conoscente helped transform SCOR’s team and portfolio in the Americas before assuming the position of CEO of SCOR’s P&C US business in 2016 and then CEO of Reinsurance worldwide in 2018. In 2019 he was appointed CEO of SCOR Global P&C and a member of the Executive Committee.

Ian Kelly, British citizen, is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. After starting his career at Prudential, he then moved to the London life reinsurance department of the Gerling Group, later Revios UK, as Chief Accountant. Following the acquisition of Revios by SCOR, he was named Chief Financial Officer of the UK operations in 2007. In 2009 Kelly was appointed Director of General Accounting and Group Reporting and was responsible for consolidating the SCOR Group’s financial reporting. Kelly enhanced his strategic, regulatory and financial experience at SCOR with his appointment as Head of Group Financial Planning and Analysis in 2011. Kelly continued to oversee the Group’s financial planning and was named Head of Investor Relations in 2016 before becoming Chief Executive Officer Finance was appointed Chief Executive Officer and member of the Executive Committee in 2020.

Frieder Knüpling, German citizen, has been a member of the Group Executive Committee of SCOR since 2010, initially as Deputy CEO of SCOR Global Life, then as Deputy Group Chief Risk Officer and finally as Group CRO. Prior to that, he held various functions in the actuarial, risk and finance departments at SCOR, Revios and Gerling Global Re. He has degrees in mathematics and physics and a doctorate in economics. He is a scholarship holder of the German Actuarial Association (DAV).

Romain Launay, French citizen, is a graduate of the École Polytechnique, the École des Mines de Paris and the Center des Hautes tudes de l’Assurance. After holding various positions in the French Ministry of Economy and Finance between 2004 and 2009, he became an advisor to the Prime Minister in 2009. He joined SCOR in February 2012 as Senior Advisor to the Chairman and CEO before being named Group Secretary General in May 2014. In February 2016, Launay was named Group Chief Operating Officer.

Claire Le Gall-Robinson, a French citizen, is admitted to the bar in Paris and New York and is a graduate of Harvard Law School (Master of Laws) and Paris II-Panthéon Assas University (corporate and tax law). She worked for the leading US law firms Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP for over 17 years. Prior to joining SCOR as Group General Secretary in 2016, she was a partner at UK law firm Gowling WLG. She has been teaching at Sciences Po Law School since 2010. In March 2021, she was appointed to SCOR’s Group Executive Committee.

Brona magician, Irish national, holds a BS in Actuarial and Finance from University College Dublin. From 2006 to 2011 she worked for Transamerica International Reinsurance Ireland, which was acquired by SCOR in 2011. From 2011 to 2013 she was CFO of SCOR Global Life Reinsurance Ireland. In 2013 she moved to the USA to take on the position of CFO. to take over, Americas, at SCOR Global Life and was promoted to Deputy CEO, Americas, in 2015. She returned to Dublin in February 2017 and became a senior actuary for SCOR Global Life. In November 2017 she was appointed Head of Client Solutions and a member of the Executive Leadership Team of SCOR Global Life. In September 2018 she became Deputy CEO and Head of Global Markets for SCOR Global Life and a member of the Group Executive Committee. Magee is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland.

Fabian Uffer, Swiss citizen, began his career in 2003 as a life actuary in the insurance industry at Allianz Suisse. He then worked for a startup called CelsiusPro, developing a pricing engine for weather derivatives. In 2009, Uffer joined SCOR’s P&C Risk Management department. He then moved to the Financial Modeling and Risk Analysis group, where he held various positions, including Head of Risk Modeling. In 2021 he was appointed Chief Risk Officer. Uffer studied at the University of Waterloo and holds a master’s degree in mathematics from ETH Zurich. He is a fully qualified actuary of the Swiss Association of Actuaries.

Francois de Varenne, French citizen, is a graduate of the École Polytechnique and civil engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées. He has a doctorate in finance and is a graduate actuary at the Institut de Science Financière et d’Assurances (ISFA). de Varenne joined the Fédération Française des Sociétés d’Assurances (FFSA) in 1993 as manager of economic and financial affairs. In London, he was an insurance strategist at Lehman Brothers from 1998, vice president of asset management solutions and a specialist in structured transactions for insurance and reinsurance companies at Merrill Lynch and then at Deutsche Bank. In 2003 he became managing partner of Gimar Finance & Cie. In 2005 he joined the group as Director Corporate Finance and Asset Management. In September 2007 he was appointed Group Chief Operating Officer. In October 2008, de Varenne was appointed CEO of SCOR Global Investments.
