White County is holding public hearings to lift the tax fee

CLEVELAND – The White County Board of Commissioners previously announced that it would keep the current tax rate of 10.75; However, because the rollback rate is lower than the current millage rate, a 5.36 percent increase is required to reach the 10.75 rate.

This preliminary increase will result in a millage rate of 10.750 million, an increase of 0.547 million over the rollback rate. Without this provisional tax hike, the millage rate will not be more than 10.203 million. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $ 180,000.00 is approximately $ 38.29. The proposed tax increase for non-homestead real estate with a fair market value of $ 140,000.00 is approximately $ 30.63.

State law requires municipalities and counties to “reduce” their millage rate after the property values are revalued to ensure that local governments receive the same property tax revenues after the revaluation as they did before.

With this in mind, the commissioners have announced that in order to maintain the same millage rate under state law, they will have to promote the announcement of a possible tax hike and hold three (3) public hearings on the matter.

To meet this requirement, the Commissioners will hold public hearings on Monday 26 July at 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and Monday 2 August at 4:30 p.m. All concerned citizens are invited to any or all of the public hearings held in the County Administration Building at 1235 Helen Hwy Cleveland.
