KAMPALA – Airtel Uganda will maintain its prepaid data rates despite the new 12% excise tax on the Internet, which will come into effect on Thursday July 1st, 2021.

The introduction of the new tax and the abolition of Over The Top (OTT) follows the passage of the Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill 2021 by the Ugandan Parliament on April 29, 2021.

“As of today, our subscribers don’t have to pay OTT to access social media websites and apps. We will institutionalize the consumption tax of 12% required by the Ugandan government, but Airtel Uganda will assume the consumption tax for all prepaid packages and thus maintain our prepaid data prices until further notice, ”said Amit Kapur, Chief Commercial Officer Airtel Uganda at the announcement.

“This will enable Airtel Uganda customers to seamlessly connect to the world without restrictions using our affordable and reliable 4G smartphone network.”

With the popularity of digital lifestyle devices such as smartphones and the exponential growth of mobile apps and multimedia, Internet data access has increased the demand for affordable and reliable data. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic again underscores the need as customers use the internet to carry out their day-to-day tasks such as study, work and entertainment.

To facilitate and improve this lifestyle, Airtel Uganda is aware of the affordability matrix. For Shs10,000, a subscriber receives 1.5 GB of data that an average user can comfortably use in a month.

The Freaky Friday plan has given more customers a new approach to data access in Uganda and guaranteed them cheaper options for the weekend. Every Friday, customers can subscribe to one of the two offers on offer. A customer can choose between a 24-hour bundle for UGX 4,500 only or the 3-day bundle valid until midnight on Sunday for UGX 7,500 for 6.5 GB.

The company recently launched the Chillax Bundles, a product designed to provide customers with greater flexibility and convenience while surfing Airtel Uganda’s reliable 4G network across the country. The Chillax bundles do not expire after subscribing unless they are exhausted.
