Trades NL requires modifications to the federal income tax law for craftsmen

Trades NL is looking for changes to the Federal Income Tax Act to make it easier for craftsmen who need to travel to work to get there and back.

This is one of the questions Trades NL encourages members to ask candidates during the federal election campaign.

Executive Director Darin King says there are many classes of workers who have to travel to work and there are provisions in Income Tax Act that allow certain workers to claim tax credits for expenses incurred by doing their business.

These tax breaks don’t apply to skilled workers who need to travel, King says.

He says if you’re a rebar seller you can claim your travel expenses and stay at a hotel.

“The same artisans who travel across the country to install this rebar … can’t claim a tax credit,” said King.
