Postponement of property tax

California homeowners recently hit by wildfires have until June 1 to apply for the property tax deferral program.

According to Betty T. Yee, State Controller, it can take some time and effort to gather the documents needed to determine eligibility.

“I urge anyone who thinks they might benefit from this program to do their research and begin the process now,” said Yee, California’s chief financial officer.

PTP allows homeowners who are senior, blind, or disabled and who meet income, equity, and other requirements to move property tax payments to their primary residence. The standard filing period ended on February 10, but residents of 31 counties in governor-declared disaster areas were granted an extension.

Applications for PTP 2020-21 must be postmarked by Tuesday, June 1 for residents of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties.

The Controllers office said California homeowners shifted residential taxes through PTP by more than $ 4 million in 2019-2020. As of May 4th, more than $ 4.2 million has been paid out for the 2020-21 tax year.

Funding is limited and applications are processed in the order in which they are received. Participants must reapply every year and prove that they continue to meet the conditions of participation.

The interest rate on all taxes deferred under PTP this tax year is 5%. A mortgage is placed on the property or a security agreement is filed on a prefabricated house until the deferred taxes are paid back.

Applications for the tax year 2021-22 will be available from September. Applications and program details can be found online at sco.ca.gov/ardtax_prop_tax_postponement or by calling 800-952-5661.
