TRENTON – The legislation sponsored by Senator Christopher Connors, Rep. Brian Rumpf, and Rep. DiAnne Gove that would extend the current property tax exemption for disabled veterans to disabled veteran shareholders and their surviving spouses residing in a cooperative or joint housing association Committee on Affairs approved by the Military and Veterans Assembly on March 15.
The entire Senate unanimously passed S-956 on July 30th last year.
The 9th District Delegation made the following statement on the advancement of the Legislative Initiative of their Veterans (S-956 / A-911):
“Corrective action is required to change applicable law. Disabled veteran shareholders and their surviving spouses residing in a cooperative or mutual community that is their legal residence should be eligible for the disabled veteran’s property tax exemption.
“These veterans are denied eligibility based on a legal technique that defines placement. Under applicable law, permanent residence in or around a disabled veteran must be a condo, single-family home, or apartment building.
“As the unanimous support of the Senate and the bipartisan sponsorship of our legislation by members of both legislative chambers shows, it is only appropriate and fair to change the law so that the disabled veterans concerned are finally entitled to this form of property tax relief. These disabled veterans deserve nothing less in view of their sacrifice and service to our nation. “
To better serve the interests of their constituents, members of the 9th Legislative District served in several consecutive legislative sessions on the Senate and Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
