The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) hasn’t processed more than 31 million tax returns, and that number continues to grow. According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, which acts as the IRS’s independent agency, millions of tax returns remain to be processed due to pandemic issues, changes in tax law and downsizing. While most tax returns have been lagging behind for many different reasons, the main one that was left unprocessed was more than 15.8 million paper tax returns for 2019 and 2020. And of course, the delay in processing also results in tax refunds and stimulus payments being withheld, and potentially affecting the monthly child tax credit payment for millions of taxpayers. What can taxpayers do if their tax returns have not yet been processed? Consider calling a tax advisor on your behalf. Tax advisors have a special telephone number that can avoid the usual long waiting times. Check the status of your tax return by creating an online account with IRS.gov. If you don’t have any paperwork to submit yet, here are some tips to make sure you submit quickly. Make sure you submit electronically. Only send a paper return if that’s the only option available to you. Make sure you are filing your return certified once you’ve submitted it on paper to the IRS and the return has been processed but is still waiting for your tax refund? What can you do?
