Sebago residents will put a strain on the city and school department’s budgets at the annual city meeting, due to be held in person on Tuesday, May 25th.
The proposed municipal budget of $ 2.7 million represents a 3.5% increase over ongoing expenses, or just over $ 91,000.
That increase will be largely a wash, however, as the city council’s arrest warrant predicts a 20% increase in excise tax and revenue from fees of $ 95,700 for a total of $ 583,000.
The net school budget proposal is set at $ 1.89 million or less than one percentage point below the 2020-21 operating budget.
Residents are also asked to use $ 225,000 of the unrestricted fund balance toward school operating expenses at the prior-year level.
The Sebago Schools Department’s spending budget for fiscal year 2021-22 is $ 3.81 million, an increase of 1.9% over the current year’s spending plan.
In a flyer to the community, Superintendent Marc Gendron said the district is hiring an additional technician and adding more man hours for the director of special education, which is most of the increase.
The school district is forecasting a 2.9% increase, or approximately $ 95,600, in local taxes, bringing that proportion to nearly $ 3.4 million. Government funding is expected to increase by nearly 42%. The school district received approximately $ 239,500 in government funding this fiscal year and expects an increase of nearly $ 100,000 for a total of approximately $ 340,000. Overall, revenue has increased by almost 5% compared to the current budget.
The annual city get-together will take place in person from May 25th at 6:00 p.m. at Sebago Town Hall at 406 Bridgton Road. Then there will be a referendum on the school budget. Voters will vote for their elected officials on June 8th at the same location that elections are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. More information is available at townofsebago.org.
