The town publishes an announcement on violence within the Capitol

Leavenworth City Commissioners have issued a statement condemning the recent violence in the US Capitol and insisting that those responsible be held accountable.

The statement was read by Mayor Nancy Bauder during the city commission meeting on Tuesday. Bauder said the statement came from the entire commission.

The statement dealt with violence that erupted on January 6, when protesters in the US Capitol broke security as members of Congress met to count the votes of the electoral college for the presidential election.

“It is illegal, dangerous and unpatriotic to resort to violence to undermine our democratic institutions and processes or to overthrow properly elected governing bodies,” said Bauder, reading the statement.

Bauder said the rioters had “disfigured the Capitol, damaged property, killed a Capitol police officer, injured many other Capitol police officers, and put the lives of Vice President (Mike) Pence and every congressional officer and staff at risk. We also insist that federal law enforcement agencies hold these insurgents accountable for their violent and unlawful acts and incite them to the violence they committed during their attack on the Capitol. “

As Bauder read the statement, he mentioned concerns about the threat of additional violence in the US Capitol and Capitol buildings on January 20, as President-elect Joe Biden takes his inauguration.

“We urge our state-elected officials and Governor (Laura) Kelly to take all necessary steps to secure the state Capitol in Topeka for the protection of life and property while allowing lawmakers to conduct its business. On site, our police will remain vigilant, as always, in fulfilling their public safety obligations until January 20th. “

The Leavenworth City Commission:

• Approved an offer from Linaweaver Construction, Lansing, for $ 160,760 for a sewer improvement project in the Fourth and Olive Streets area.

• Agreement reached to move forward with a proposal for a regulation on the issuance of taxable corporate bonds for a luxury and import project.

The commissioners had previously approved a resolution expressing their intention to issue nationwide taxable bonds for industry revenue. The regulation in question would authorize the issuance of debt securities for industry revenue.

The regulation will be returned to the Commission for a final vote at a future meeting.

Deputy City Administrator Taylour Tedder described industrial bonds as an end-to-end economic incentive. He said the city shouldn’t go into debt. He said it will allow the Luxury and Imports car dealership to use the city’s tax exemption certificate for purchases related to a renovation and expansion project.
